Last spring I became obsessed with Jungleland, the final track on Bruce Springsteen’s 1975 masterpiece Born to Run. There’s something about the way Springsteen throws all this mortal drama in our faces and then doubles back, just for a moment. Maybe he’s speaking to himself. Maybe the image is a shadow he’s casting, one last cog in the dioramic vision of life and death in New Jersey he’s arranged with such care. Maybe it’s just a good verse. Either way, when he sings it, it comes out angry, rough, perfect:

And the poets down here don’t write nothin’ at all/They just stand back and let it all be.
